How household cleaners damage your health?
Anti-odor products and general purpose cleaners contain chemicals that are suspected to cause lung problems, heart disease, stroke and cancer.
Ceramic cleaners often contain irritants that harm the lungs and skin. If mixed with chlorine, the fumes can cause severe damage to the lungs.
The chlorine bleach is a cleaner that most often accidentally ingested by children. Moreover, combined with ammonia or acid based cleaners such as vinegar, it emits chloramines, a highly toxic gas, even after brief exposure.
Mold eliminators often contain chemical fungicides that can cause allergic reactions, lung problems or trigger asthma.
Disinfectants sometimes contain products that can cause severe damage to the kidneys and liver.
Toilet bowl cleaners are made of chemicals that can burn skin, cause serious damage to the stomach if ingested and cause blindness if splashed in the eye.
How can you get information on the toxicity of a product?
All these ingredients have been classified as toxic and are mentioned in the List of Toxic Substances in Schedule 1 by the Canadian law on environmental protection (1999).
